Medical equipment, pharmaceuticals. Medical exports rose to $384 million in H1 of 2017

Russia produces a wide range of products for the medical industry, including medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and diagnostic systems. This is one of the five best-performing export sectors in terms of volume.

One Russian company which actively exports its products is Axion. The Axion brand has a rich 45-year history, and today the company produces a wide range of medical equipment for use in various fields of medicine: cardiology, neonatology, resuscitation, surgery, and physiotherapy.

Axion-produced automated external defibrillators are popular on foreign markets. Among other Axion products that have earned the trust of international clients are electrocardiographs that transfer data via GSM communication channels, and phototherapy units for newborns.

The Axion quality management system is certified according to the ISO 9001–2001 quality standard. This makes Axion products especially attractive. Axion medical equipment is used throughout CIS countries, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Turkey, and Indonesia.

The success of Axion and other Russian producers on the international market is further ensured by the active support the industry receives from the government. Under the state program ‘Development of the Pharmaceutical and Medical Industry, 2013–2020,’ many new high-quality products are being developed. As of the beginning of 2017, 65 import-substitute and 10 innovative medical products have been introduced on the Russian market.

Among the products that have hit the market over the past year are a new X-ray imaging system, the Altdef automated external defibrillator, Medinzh-ST full-flow pyrocarbon prosthetic heart valves, and the MPR7 modular patient monitor. Not only is there great demand for these products in Russia, they are also gradually taking over foreign markets.

Many foreign markets have expressed interest in neonatal equipment for resuscitation and intensive care of newborns. This includes incubators, phototherapy units, as well as anaesthetic and respiratory equipment which, over the past 20 years, has saved the lives of more than 3.5 million children. The latest versions of the equipment have been unveiled to foreign audiences and have received a lot of praise from representatives of the EU, as well as Asian and African countries.

One of the key areas of development in the medical industry is patient rehabilitation equipment. In 2016, under the aegis of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, the Council for Science and Technology was convened to compile a list of equipment to develop. The list included more than 200 items. Most have already been put into development. According to the ministry’s strategy, 4.5 billion rubles worth of these products is planned to be delivered to foreign markets by 2025.

To date, the key importers of Russian medical products are the CIS states, accounting for more than 70 percent of all purchases. A considerable share of the exports goes to Europe (11 percent) and Asia-Pacific (8 percent).
